A recent time when I wasn't aware, and later became aware was when I reacted with frustration to my daughter's wanting to tell me something when I was in the middle of something. I was curt and showed annoyance and some anger. A moment later I apologized and told her "I'm sorry sweetie, I am tired from a long day, and I was trying to focus on something and felt annoyed when you were trying to speak to me. I felt distracted and then annoyed. What was is you wanted to share with me?" It went something like that, but I had reacted instead of responding calmly "Can you please wait until I'm finished to share your story with me?"

I resonate with this Michael. Respond not react is the key and it’s getting better with practice.
